Tackling homelessness in Swindon

There are a number of organisations helping people who are homeless in Swindon. Different options are available depending on individual circumstances.

Local services

Swindon Borough Council’s housing options should be contacted in the first instance for help with housing, or if you are homeless or threatened with homelessness. The council has a duty to prevent you from becoming homeless or to help you find somewhere to live if you do become homeless. T: 01793 445500 / E: hoptions@swindon.gov.uk

There are also services across Swindon which can help people who are homeless to manage daily living and address other challenges they may be facing.

Housing

  • Supported housing

Find out about Threshold’s supported housing for single people who require a low to medium level of support here (link). There are other organisations providing supported housing for different types and levels of support. For more details on supported housing visit Swindon Borough Council’s website.

  • Social housing

Inadequately housed Swindon residents who do not own a home or have sufficient income/savings can apply for social housing through Swindon Borough Council. Social housing offers low rent and a safe and secure tenancy. Swindon has over 10,000 social housing properties, however demand heavily outweighs supply and it can take years to be allocated a home.

To be eligible for a social housing property, you must apply to join the housing register. Once confirmed, you can start bidding for properties. Available properties are advertised online and you can bid for one property a week.

For information on applying for social housing, visit Swindon Borough Council’s website

  • Sheltered housing

People who are over 60 who have housing needs and want to live independently, can apply for sheltered housing. People over 50 can apply if they receive disability living allowance.
